How do we design masks and face coverings to optimize for wearability, comfort, style, accessibility, and adoption?

Most countries have policies regarding the wearing of face masks and coverings in public settings. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States suggests the use of cloth face masks in addition to physical distancing practices to prevent transmission. Masks are seen as one of the first lines of defense in transmission control, but they can be uncomfortable to wear, create challenges for communities like the hearing impaired, and can be perceived as ugly. There has also been a litany of speculation around the effectiveness of masks fueled by numerous misinformation campaigns.

We’re asking for the community to weigh in on design innovations to optimize the wearability, comfort, style, and accessibility of masks to decrease stigma and increase widespread adoption.
