Summary

A mobile application that would help communities to learn, grow and geo tag endangered plants for enrichment of biodiversity in urban areas

Description

Description

I envision a program for promoting biodiverse initiatives in urban areas. Food and biodiversity are intertwined and responsive to changes within the other. In recent decades, intensive food production has taken priority over biodiverse landscapes, as vibrant ecosystems have been replaced with single species agricultural practices that concentrate on a small fraction of available foods and remove species considered weeds or pests. Estimates suggest that only 12 plant crops and 14 animal species make up 98% of the world’s food, and we have already lost many of their wild relatives.

l suggest a Urban challenge to let people grow plants of out numbered species or endangered species to achieve a biodiverse and food-secure future. The application would provide a list of such outnumbered species, give information on how to plant and nurture them. The application would let people to take geo tagged photos of the same. The same will be populated in the database. This challenge not only let's people to increase the out numbered species but also map where they are growing because of the geo tagged information. This will be a community driven interesting project where schools, colleges can partake.. Eventually a holistic biodiversity effort as a way of life in urban cities would be an outcome of the effort. The Geo tagged information would be a rich source of information for scientists and policy makers engaged in biodiversity initiatives. Biotag promotes the growth of  endangered species in rooms or at home. Biotag facilitates the campaign and whoever does this will receive a unique plant at home and will improve the oxygen content in the room.

Who will take these actions?

The projected will be steered by myself.

In addition to volunteers in my community for field work , I would hire two personnel on part time basis for coordinating the program and  managing the web portal.

What are the projected costs?

The projected cost of development ,deployment  of web platform for an year would be 18.000 USD. This includes the end to end campaign , 10,000 seeds/samplings and execution of project in 2021

Timeline

Identification of nurseries  and  seeds, Plants and potting material would be done in Jan 2021

The development of mobile application (ios, android) and deployment would be completed by Feb 2021.

Bio tag campaign would be initiated regionally in April  2021 in partnership with selected schools and colleges.

The first evaluation of the progress of the project would be done in June  2021 with a call for entries on Geo tagged plants .

The photographs shared by community will be made into a collage, with infographic visual  region wise/school/college wise and shared with the community

The population of data would be done and presented to regional firms and corporates to support the initiative .
